How often should I wash my wig or topper?

When it comes to washing your wig or topper, it really depends on your lifestyle. Generally, we recommend washing it every 6-8 wears if you’re wearing it for a full day each time. If you’re only wearing it for short periods throughout the week, you can stretch the time between washes a bit longer.

It’s important to restore moisture to the hair, and washing is key to achieving this. Keeping your wig or topper clean helps maintain its look and feel and can extend the lifetime of your piece.

How do hair toppers work?

A hair topper is a crown hair extension that clips onto your own hair. They can also be worn for hair loss or thinning areas, additional volume, length, or even to cover roots between salon visits. However, they’re not ideal for anyone with total hair loss, as they don’t provide the same coverage as a wig.

How do topper clips work?

Hair toppers are attached to the head using pressure sensitive clips. The clips, which have a comb-like appearance, open and close by pressing on them. They contain “teeth” which slide into and grip onto your natural hair.

Can I curl my wig or topper?

Yes, you can style your hairpiece with heat tools! We recommend using a heat protection spray, such as ghost mist spray, before applying any heat styling tools. Whether you prefer heatless curling methods, a straightener, or a curling wand, you can style your alternative human hair wig or topper as though it’s your own.

It’s important to note that only human hair wigs and toppers can be styled with heat tools. This is because synthetic fibres can be damaged by heat.

Is a wig or hair topper hot?

Wigs and toppers are generally considered not hot to wear. In warmer conditions, they might feel a bit warm on the head, but it’s quite similar to wearing a hat. A hair topper is lighter and cooler compared to a full wig. Our wigs are crafted with lightweight, breathable materials to ensure they stay comfortable and cool, even in warmer weather.

Why are toppers and wigs so expensive?

Toppers and wigs can be expensive for several reasons. High-quality materials, like human hair and premium synthetic fibres, are used to ensure a natural look and feel. Human hair, in particular, involves an intricate process of ethical sourcing, careful processing, and detailed handcrafting. The different hair lengths and cap constructions also impact the price.

While it may feel like a significant upfront investment, the quality and longevity of our wigs and toppers often justify the cost. They’re designed to give you a beautiful, natural look that boosts your confidence and lasts for a long time. Plus, the confidence and comfort they provide can make a world of difference in your daily life, making them well worth the investment.

Should a topper be the same length as my own hair?

When choosing a hair topper, it doesn’t necessarily need to be the same length as your natural hair, depending on the style you want to achieve. However, if the topper is significantly longer or shorter than your natural hair, it might not blend as well and may not look as natural.

Can you wear a wig or topper everyday?

Yes, you can wear a wig or topper every day. Many women make wigs or toppers a part of their daily routine, whether it’s due to hair loss or just wanting to change their look. It’s all about what makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Can I sleep in my wig or hair topper?

We do not recommend sleeping in your wig or topper, unless your hair is attached with invisible grafting or mesh integration.

The clips from toppers can cause tension on your natural hair while you sleep, which can be harmful. Additionally, the friction on your wig from sleeping can reduce its lifespan. It’s best to remove your wig or topper before bed to keep both your hair and the piece in the best condition.

Can you wear a wig with long hair?

Yes, you can. The key is to keep your bio hair as flat as possible. If you want to wear a shorter style we would recommend braiding or tying your hair back. If your natural hair is a short bob and you want to go longer, try wearing a wig stocking under the cap to conceal your hair underneath.

Can I go swimming in my wig or topper?

Swimming with a wig or hair topper can damage it due to chemicals and tangling. If you decide to swim with a wig or hair topper, make sure to do so with caution and rinse it thoroughly with clean water afterwards to remove chlorine or salt, and carefully detangle it to prevent matting.

Can wigs and hair toppers get wet?

Yes, if you’re out and about and get caught in the rain, it’s totally okay. Your wig or topper might just need a bit of restyling once it’s dry. If the style has completely lost its shape, you may need to give it a wash and blow-dry again. No need to worry – it happens to everyone!

Can wigs and toppers help with hair growth?

While wigs and toppers do not promote hair growth, they can shield your hair and scalp from UV exposure and help you keep your own hair protected by reducing the need for constant styling.

Will hair toppers damage your hair?

When worn correctly and cared for properly, a topper won’t damage your natural hair.

We use pressure-sensitive clips to protect your hair, but if these clips become worn, they can become sharp. When this happens, we recommend changing your clips over.

What other ways can I attach my topper or wig?

At Beverly May Hair, we know that one solution doesn’t fit all. Over the years, we’ve found various ways to attach wigs and toppers because everyone’s needs are unique.

For toppers, we can use a slide comb or tailor the clip positions at the front. If you have no hair at the front but some at the back, we can use double-sided tape at the front and still attach clips at the back. Top grip bands can also be handy for attaching at the front while using clips at the back.

For wigs, we can use a wig grip band for a secure fit, and clips can be added at the sides and nape if you have hair to clip into. Silicone can also be added to sections of your wig for a more secure feel, but this is only recommended if you have no hair, as silicone can pull on natural hair.

We’re here to help you find the best solution for your needs, ensuring comfort and security with every wear.
