Your new hair is super easy to care for and can be styled just like your own. It can be styled, curled, straightened and even coloured (by a professional). It can be transformed to suit any occasion. However, it does require some special care. Taking care of your human hair investment will make it last longer and look even more fabulous.
We understand that embarking on a hair-wearing adventure can feel both exciting and unfamiliar, so we’re here to guide you every step of the way as you discover the beauty of alternative hair. Like anything, the more times you repeat the process, the more familiar it will become.
How to care for a human hair wig or topper
Here’s your guide on how to refresh, style, and store your Beverly May Hair Topper:
Be gentle when washing your topper
Be gentle. Using harsh shampoos or conditioners, or vigorously scrubbing the lace or silk can lead to tangling, shedding and breakage.
Please note: washing is recommended every 6–8 wears. This is based on a full-day wear seven days a week, so if you wear your topper only for a couple of hours out of the week, then washing time can be extended. You can usually tell by the feel of the hair and smell.
How to wash your wig or topper without a mannequin head
Please note we recommend washing your topper on a mannequin head. If you don’t own one, use this method:
- Before washing your piece, gently brush out the knots with your Beverly May Paddle Brush. If you have a wavy hairpiece, please use a wide tooth comb.
- Fill a sink with lukewarm water. Add a small amount of Davroe Moisture Sensation Shampoo to the water to create a soapy lather.
- Submerge the hairpiece in the water and slowly dip the hair topper into the water holding onto the part lace or silk area to avoid tangling.
- Rinse out all of the shampoo completely.
- Apply a small amount of Davroe Moisture Senses conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends. Avoid applying to the lace or silk area, as this will loosen the knots and lessen the life of the piece.
- Rinse out all the conditioner thoroughly. Using too much conditioner or not rinsing completely will leave your piece looking "dirty".
- Treat your hair to regular conditioning masks to maintain it. We recommend Davroe MCT moisture conditioning treatment, or if you have more time on your hands, the Qaba Hair Mask mixed with Yako Drops is the ultimate hair treatment.
How to wash your topper on a mannequin head
- Gently comb through your topper to remove all knots and tangles.
- Attach your topper to the mannequin head using T-pins. Please be careful with the placement of your T-pins! Take care to place them through the clips and avoid the front of the topper, especially if you have lace.
- Using lukewarm water, wet your topper.
- Using a sea sponge, apply shampoo in a downward motion to avoid friction.
- This can be done twice if it has been a while between washes or if there is makeup around the front of your topper.
- Rinse using lukewarm water.
- Using a different sponge, apply the conditioner to mid-lengths and ends only in a downward motion to avoid rubbing or friction. We don’t want any conditioner getting trapped in the cap, as this can weaken the knots.
- Gently comb through using a wide tooth comb.
- Rinse and wrap in a towel, gently squeezing out any extra moisture.
All done! Your hairpiece is ready for drying and styling.
How to dry your wig or topper
Now, it’s time to eliminate excess water! Gently squeeze it out and wrap your piece in a towel, giving it another squeeze for good measure. Then rest on a mannequin head or stand, gently combing the hair to your desired part line.
If using a mannequin head with T-pins, be sure they are pinned onto the head through the clips on the topper (not through the lace or silk). Let it air dry to prolong its life, or if you’re in a hurry, blow dry it with the nozzle facing downward for that flawless finish.
Once it’s completely dry, apply ghost mist heat protectant and style away.
How to style your wig or topper
Wigs and toppers offer endless styling possibilities. Experiment with different looks — straight, curly, updos, braids — and discover the joy of reinventing your style!
When it comes to using heat styling tools, they’re a necessary evil for achieving those fabulous, runway-worthy looks. But don’t forget their impact on the longevity of your hair!
How to use heat tools safely
Please note that a hair topper can become damaged by various factors if not handled with care!
When swimming:
We do not recommend wearing your topper on the water as the clips may end up wrapped around your natural hair and can cause damage. We would recommend tying your hair up with the topper and only enter the water up to shoulder height. Otherwise, you do so at your own risk.
Please note that salt water and chlorine will cause damage to the hair and will lessen the lifespan of your piece. Let’s be honest, high-quality human hair is not a low-cost investment. We recommend using a lower-cost wig or topper for your beach, such as a synthetic piece, a gorgeous sun hat, or a cute turban.
When wearing sunscreens
Warning: some sunscreens contain avobenzone and octocrylene, which can change the colour of your blonde or grey alternative hair. Choose alternative options to preserve your colour, such as mineral sunscreens.
The following are safe sunscreens for wigs and toppers:
- Bare Republic Mineral Sunscreen lotion
- Sun Bum Mineral SPF 50 Sunscreen lotion
- Coola Mineral Body Organic Sunscreen
Blonde hair care
Blonde wigs and toppers will oxidise over time, eventually looking more golden. They will benefit from a purple shampoo rinse or re-tone at the salon (when needed).
Avoid these products
Please avoid excessive amounts of hairspray as this can get a build-up, which is hard to remove. Simply apply hairspray 1–2 times over a week, or every two wears before washing out and re-applying. Do not apply multiple times.
We recommend only using clear oils on blonde wigs and toppers. Please avoid darker hair oils such as Moroccan oil on blondes, as it can deposit colour in to the hair leaving it looking brassy.
Friction and rubbing
Constant friction against rough surfaces, such as hats, hard hats, headrests, or collars, can cause tangling or hair loss. Be mindful of your piece’s contact with abrasive materials. Please note, we do not recommend wearing a hat over your hairpiece.
Sun exposure
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade and weaken the colour or your hairpiece. UV protection sprays can help minimise sun damage.
Remember, treating your wig with gentleness and using proper care techniques will help prolong its lifespan.
